Our Story

Empower was founded in 2013 as a grassroots effort in a small coastal Massachusetts town to bring teenage girls who had lost their mothers together on Mother’s Day.  Today, Empower has grown into an international nonprofit that supports, connects, and empowers all children and young adults who have lost a parent.

Empower hosts events and peer support, reminding children they are not alone in their grief. All programs are non-therapeutic, community-based, and volunteer-driven. Empower programs and activities are at no charge to the family.

What We Do

Empower hosts events that offer peer support, reminding children they are not alone in their grief and offers a unique one-on-one mentor program with positive role models from the community who help teach, “loss is survivable.”   Join the Empower community now!

Connect

Sometimes all you need is to know that you aren’t alone. Empower brings together an inspiring community built on shared experience and connection.

Support

The tremendous weight of grief can be a little lighter with someone to share it with — the entire Empower network is here to support children of parent loss.

Empower

Our mentor program and events remind children of parent loss they are not alone in their grief and bring them together with others who can relate to their loss.

Active Areas

We are currently serving children within our active regions and additional cities across the country will soon follow as we build a strong Ambassador program and increase awareness of our mission. Our sister organization, empowerHER UK, is available here.

Founding Story

Founder Cara Belvin was nine years old when her mother Kit died of breast cancer. Cara founded Empower (formerly empowerHER®) in 2013 out of the gratitude she had for all the layers of support her family received growing up.
