be a part of our story

Our 1:1 MENTOR MATCH PROGRAM is for girls ages 5-24 who have experienced the loss of their mothers and reside in Massachusetts and Connecticut. empowerHER Mentors are age 25+ who support the growth and empowerment of each young girl, instilling hope and optimism and building confidence. Our mentors help young girls find their voice and remind them they are not alone in their grief.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE MATCH PROCESS? empowerHER has partnered with Mass Mentor Partnerships (MMP) to follow best practices in screening, matching and monitoring all empowerHER matches. Thanks to MMP, we are increasing the odds that a mentoring relationship will endure and be effective. We know that good matches stem from our high-quality matching process that includes program-specific criteria and takes into account the characteristics of each Mentor and Mentee!

In our close work with the families to make a match, a trend has emerged and when asked what they are looking for in a prospective Mentor, the father or guardian will often request a match with a woman who can “relate to her loss”.  Someone who can reassure her that we can hold both grief and joy.  Someone who has walked the same path and has powered through her grief after the loss of her mother.

To this end, Mentors are typically women who have experienced the early loss of their mothers in childhood or early adulthood. However, empowerHER has countless other volunteer opportunities for interested volunteers to further our mission and volunteer as Event Committee Members who plan one of our 6 EVENTS for GIRLS each year (think Cooking Classes, our Annual Mother’s Day Retreat, an Actor’s Workshop and more)! Volunteers also support our mission by planning fundraising events, serving on our Board of Directors, and as PopUpParty Hosts in their own communities! empowerHER currently serves 175 girls in Massachusetts + Connecticut through our EVENTS for GIRLS, Initiatives such as Back-to-School Shopping and College Care Packages and EVENTS for DADS, in addition to our 1:1 Mentor Match Program. Not all girls enrolled at empowerHER have requested a Mentor. Once a girl has indicated an interest in a Mentor, we begin the match process. And, as one would imagine, the process takes much careful consideration.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION DETAILS: Mentor Applicants who meet the mentor requirements will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview held quarterly in-person or via video conferencing around MA + CT. While waiting for a Mentee Match, we encourage you to also sign up for our Newsletter, follow us on Facebook, and reach out to us directly for other ways to get involved at empowerHER. Often, prospective Mentors serve on an EVENTS for GIRLS committee, planning cooking classes and beach parties, or find other impactful ways to give such as planning our next big fundraiser or hosting their own PopUpParty!

WHY I MENTOR: “It’s a way of sharing my own life experience of losing my mother when I was a child. I hope my story will inspire a young girl to realize that in spite of these circumstances, she can leverage it and accomplish or become anything she wants...that it will not define her but will give her the strength and resilience necessary for a fulfilling life. But like anything in life, it is an evolution – and to see what’s on the other side can be the motivation and encouragement needed in the beginning”. -eH Mentor

WHAT ROLE DOES THE MENTOR SERVE FOR THE GIRL AND HER FAMILY? At empowerHER, our program is tailored to meet the changing needs of the family following the tragic loss of a young mother. empowerHER does not replace the role of the mother or minimize the role of the father, stepmother or other family or friends in the girl's life. Instead, our program is designed to provide additional support and resources throughout the year for the girl and her family.

WHO MENTORS? empowerHER Mentors are women age 25+ and have experienced the loss of their mothers in childhood or young adulthood. Mentors commit to spending approximately 5 hours per month for a 12-month period with their Mentee. Mentees are offered friendship, inspiration and support in a safe and nurturing environment under the guides of empowerHER! And most importantly, Mentors show a young girl there is a beautiful life still at her fingertips, and above all else, it is survivable.

The safety of each empowerHER young girl is our top priority. Our 1:1 MENTOR MATCH PROGRAM conducts a thorough background check on each prospective Mentor. We provide annual training and ongoing support by closely monitoring every matched relationship. If you should have any further questions about the mentor program, please connect or schedule a call with our Mentor Program Coordinator, Joanie Quealy, R.N., by emailing
